Help needed for small software contractors, says report

A GOVERNMENT system should be simplified to help out smaller businesses, a report has found.

The joint Intellect and the British Computer Society report has recommended the government procurement system allowing software firms to apply for public-sector contracts be made to favour small businesses and contractors to aid them in a tougher economic market.

The report predicts smaller software contractors, who make up one-third of Britian’s IT industry, will face stiffer competition from European rivals in 2009, and that simplifying the process will make “life easier” for freelancers and small businesses.

Freelancers can benefit from clutter-free websites, survey finds

Freelancers hoping to find work via their website should keep its design “clutter free”.

A survey of over 4,000 web users by Burst Media found websites cluttered with advertising were less effective than sites that favoured a more minimal approach.

The survey found nearly 30 per cent of visitors to a site logged off immediately if it was too cluttered.

It also found women were more likely to not visit a cluttered site than men.

Burst Media’s vice president of marketing Chuck Moran recommended no more than two ads per page.
