The New Enterprise Allowance is the subject of something of a political pissing match at the moment. Business and Enterprise Minister Mark Prisk (predictably) praised his new creation, saying it is important to foster an “enterprise culture” in the UK. Prime Minister David “Dave” Cameron also weighed in on the new measures, calling the need for support for small businesses “vital”.

5 ways freelancers can prepare for a downturn

| Getting a Job,Money

Despite a sense of restrained optimism from business leaders the year ahead is likely to be a testing one for the UK economy. For example, the impact of the VAT rise on SMEs is uncertain – the Shadow Chancellor believes that it will lead to 250,000 job losses. While this could work in favour of a freelance workforce called upon to fill the gaps, it may also have an adverse effect if whole businesses go bust – particularly if they happen to be your clients.

When is the right time to form a Limited Company?

| Money

There is an ongoing debate about the benefits of contracting as a sole trader or working as a limited company owner. The typical scenario is for someone to start contracting or freelancing as a sole trader for its ease of set-up and small administrative burden. After increasing their earnings, they may then consider forming a limited company to lower their tax paying responsibilities and increase their attractiveness to potential clients.

This raises the question: when is a good time to form a limited company? And how substantial is the culture shift as you move from one business structure to another?

A year in quotes: Freelancing in 2010

| Money,News

2010 has been a memorable year which has seen recognition of the freelance community rise to unprecented levels. A few things spring to mind. We’ve seen the forming of a coalition government which has seemingly set in motion a chain of events that will eventually see an overhaul of IR35. And the second ever National Freelancers Day was a huge success with freelancers across the UK going weak at the knees when Prime Minister David Cameron addressed them directly.
