Thanks for your comments guys. A lot depends on what it is that you do. Web designers and developers both have long sales cycles - in other words, people almost certainly won't buy there and then. So a better goal for a lot of freelancers will be to get people to their site and get them to take a smaller step, like signing up for a newsletter, subscribing to your blog or submitting their details on an enquiry form, so you can at least continue to have a dialogue with them and keep them warm until they're ready to buy. AdWords should be seen as a lead generation tool, not a straight sales tool in those circumstances.

You're right though, there will definitely be some people that AdWords doesn't work for. For example, a high end web designer who's done work with major corporates wouldn't find clients like that using AdWords. What I'm getting at with these posts though is not that AdWords will work for everyone, but that it can work for more people than you might think. It is very easy to get the approach wrong though, so keep an eye out for my next two posts to see what I mean by this.

Hmmm... it will be very interesting to find out how well Adwords works out for freelancers, and whether it's really a viable option - or how to make it a viable option.

I haven't tried adwords myself, but I heard that it doesn't work well for web designers/developers....they get clicks but no sales.
