Fixing the Money Pipeline 300x224 Important Employment Law changes from 6th April 2010 Effective from April 6th are the following changes to employment law

  • ‘Fit’ notes will replace the ’sick notes’ currently given by GP’s when individuals are ill. Read our updated Guide to Sickness and Statutory Sick Pay

  • A new right for employees to request time off to undertake study or training is introduced where employees work in organisations with 250+ people. All organisations will be covered from April 2011. Read our Guide to Your Employment Rights 2010.

  • Statutory Maternity Pay, Statutory Adoption Pay, Maternity Allowance and Paternity Pay – rises to £124.88 per week (from £123.06). For further details on any of these pay and leave rights read our guides to

  • Maternity Leave and Pay
  • Statutory Adoption Pay
  • Paternity Pay.

  • The minimum age at which people can start to receive their pension payments from an occupational or personal pension scheme rises from 50 to 55. And the number of years’ contributions required to achieve a full basic state pension reduces to 30 years for both men and women.

  • The blacklisting of workers from employment as a result of their union membership or activities is prevented. See What are my main employment rights for more information.

  • The legislation to introduce additional paternity leave and pay is introduced but is effective only for children who are born after 3rd April 2011. This gives additional leave (and pay) where the mother or adopter of the child has returned to work –- we plan to cover this in more detail soon.

  • There is no change to Statutory Sick Pay which stays at £79.15 per week.
