You may have the right to take Paternity Leave or Parental Leave:

Paternity Leave and Pay

You have a right to take paternity leave and pay if you are an employee and have worked continuously for your employer for 26 weeks; and if you are a worker you may qualify for paternity pay –
  • Paternity Leave – You can take up to two consecutive weeks off,
  • If you are entitled to Statutory Paternity Pay you will be paid for these 2 weeks  – however, your employer may offer more generous pay in your contract.
  • In certain circumstances, from 3rd April 2011, you may also be eligible for up to 26 weeks Additional Paternity Leave and Pay.

Parental Leave

You may also be eligible for Parental Leave – which is available to employees who have 1 year’s continuous service with their employer and expect to have parental responsibility for the child.  Parental leave is a total of 13 weeks per child, which has to be taken by the child’s 5th Birthday.   Parental leave is unpaid.
