I agree on"It’s ideal if you can have a separate workspace".I can't work in my bedroom,it makes me sleepy.But in the office maybe I can get bid of sleepy.It's good for my work.

My partner has built me a beautiful office in the garden. It has given my youngest a room of her own and me the space and peace required to get on with my work without being surrounded by laundry and not interfering with my home life.

I would love an office – I dream of my own office (even one in the house – I briefly had a study but that rapidly got filled with other junk). I’ve been very lucky with family providing a lot of childcare and the fact that my husband often has days off in the week rather than at the weekend. I’m now in a position where I can take on more work – as my son starts school after Christmas – but there is suddenly a lot less work and more people fighting for what there is. I’ve had to think long and hard about where to go from here. So that’s another point – no matter how busy you are don’t forget to market yourself for future business otherwise you may find that as you wave goodbye to that last mammoth project that there isn’t anything else waiting in the wings.

I worked part-time from home for as long as I could and when my daughters were about three (I think, it’s a bit of a blur!) I went and got an office, and set up a business ‘proper’ with my co-director when they were five. The cost of the office was a major chunk of income but I didn’t want to stand still so saw it as a step that had to be taken to grow the business.

Cubes & Crayon are doing it in the US, not sure how successful or not it is.

One of my driving forces is family friendly working. Though I believe what is needed is more than just a creche.

That's a great point Sherry, I'd not really thought about it, not having kids myself yet, but it's great news for freelancers that we can be way more flexible than a full-time corporate employer.

I wonder if a creche at a co-working venue would work?

All the challenges are pretty spot on which many employers find difficult to accept or work with - you can't blame them really.

Things like broken bones, chicken pox and lack of childcare have proven to be real challenges for me to get proper work done. Yet these cannot be planned for!

I wanted to work and the only way for me was to work for myself. I felt a full time job would leave me to only seeing my kids in the morning/bedtime and weekends, which isn't fair on them.

In the past year I've set up a coworking space (with two others) which aims to give the flexibility for busy families. It's been quite popular with parents so far who don't necessarily need a full time work space.
