harsh winterThe Forum of Private Business (FPB) are urging small businesses to plan ahead and get prepared for a harsh winter as weather forecasters predict that temperatures will plummet soon. According to forecasters, there is likely to be widespread frost across the UK for the coming weeks, with the chance of sleet or snow in the north – terrifying stuff.

Small businesses are often hit hardest by the disruptions of severe weather conditions, which is why FPB are raising the alarm for firms to plan ahead and not get caught out by the weather – even though so far this winter has proven to be one of the mildest on record.

FPB head of campaigns, Jane Bennett, commented:  “The past few winters have demonstrated just how susceptible the UK is to extreme weather and the cost to business can quickly run into millions.”

“When infrastructure grinds to a halt staff can’t get into work, and that’s a blow which hits small firms with fewer staff,” she added.

The FPB are advising that business owners check that offices are winter-proof by carrying out basic repairs and maintenance to heating and equipment. They also recommend that businesses ensure that insurance policies are up to date as well as preparing back-up plans in the event that staff cannot make it into the office or that deliveries are delayed.

Last December we experienced the coldest weather in the UK for 100 years, with temperatures averaging -1˚C. The lost trade as a result of the freezing weather conditions cost the economy in the region of £1.2 billion, according to insurance firm RSA. Although the chances of a repeat performance seem rather slim, it never hurts to be prepared.
