Hi Newbie

I don't have rates for jobs like that... especially in the US.

I agree that it's going to be hard to compete with online, outsourced, overseas services that offer rates as low as $5 so I'd think about other ways to differentiate myself... a personal service, great support, personal contact etc.

At the end of the day even local high-school leavers will be out-performing us and doing those kind of 'basic' jobs. I'd say you need to get personal, and get more skills, so you're always ahead of the game.

I'd also think about outsourcing these kinds of jobs, pitching for larger projects and getting someone else to do the basics for $5. You can then concentrate on other more complex work and get the benefits of outsourcing rather than seeing it as a threat.

As always more skills and better service will will the day.

Hi,
Can you tell me what the going rate is for a graphic designer who just knows basic skills? For example, what would the rate be for cleaning up a scan, and isolating an image? You say don't undercut the going rate per hour, but what about all those online designers in India and Indonesia who are stealing business in the USA and UK by advertising an online rate of $2.25-$5.00 per hour??? Sure, they are hard to communicate with, but they are the ones undercutting the going rate in other countries!
